There has been a bit of trend on the 3D community lately where people started to re-create scenes from old movies, or doing remakes of characters from their childhood, as a way to pay homage to the things that inspired them to get into 3D design and animation as a career path.
Well, way before it became a trend, I started working on this project on my free time, spending one or two hours a week on it, sometimes none at all for several weeks, and making (very) slow progress as a result. As all the other 3d artists that have been doing this lately, I wanted to pay homage to an animated ad from the early 80’s, I saw it as a little kid on a Discovery channel show about the begginings of 3D animation (it was already considered old and dated by the time I saw it), but it had these raw, enchanting kind of appeal to it.
Anyway, I re-discovered this ad now as an adult, on a youtue channel dedicated to “vintage” CGI, and immediately reminded me of the feeling I had when I saw it for the first time. At first I felt the urge to create one render, just one image from the ad, trying to mimic that raw, shiny and imperfect look from the early CGI days, but then the project started to morph and grow into a full re-make of the whole ad. So I went back and started working on the robot woman.
Here’s the original ad:
And here’s the first animated shots, still a wip of course and plenty of work left to do.
Here a couple of test renders I did, though I’m still not 100% percent happy with the look, and the robot woman design. So I still might go back to the design stage and work a bit more on her before finishing the ad.
